LET’S CELEBRATE SHARING SPACES!

GET CREATIVE AND HELP MAKE A COMMUNITY ARTWORK FOR FRINGE BY THE SEA 2024

THE CHALLENGE:

The theme for this year’s Fringe by the Sea is SHARING SPACES.

At Fringe by the Sea we believe in the power of the arts to bring people together. For 10 days in August, a diverse, multi-generational audience comes together in our festival site at the Lodge Grounds  – spending time together, encountering new people and viewpoints and interacting through creativity.

We want to create a patchwork panel which allows those different perspectives and voices to be communicated, encouraging creative expression through a piece of collaborative art.

Everybody is welcome at Fringe by the Sea and we’re inviting anyone – all ages – to get involved. You could create your own square/s at home, in your craft group, or as part of a community group or school class.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The process is simple – pop in to Chandler’s on North Berwick High Street and pick up your 25cm x 25cm linen square.

Then it’s up to you.  You can embroider, sew, collage, or decorate.  You can use words or images or a combination of both.

The work should be inspired by the theme of SHARING SPACES.  Some example ideas are:

  • Embroider a phrase about something  you’d like to communicate in our shared space.
  • Embroider a portrait of somebody that you share a space with.
  • Use fabrics to collage a landscape of a space that you love.
  • Decorate your fabric with (lightweight) found objects.

The final piece will look something like THESE

Remember to leave a 2cm allowance around the edge so we can join your submission to all of the others.   And we do ask that the piece does not become too heavy to hang.

When you submit your piece, please include a short paragraph (approx 50 words) with your name and the thinking behind your work.

The end result will be either a large single piece of hanging art or a number of smaller pieces which will be displayed at Fringe by the Sea or around the town during the festival period.

We’ll be holding a series of drop-in sessions to help you get started or if you just fancy a chat while you’re creating. Details will be sent to all those who register.

ARE THERE ANY RULES/GUIDANCE?

To allow us to get in touch with you, please register your involvement by emailing debbie@fringebythesea.com
