COMMUNITY AT OUR HEART

Founded in 2008, Fringe by the Sea is a not-for-profit, 10-day multi-arts festival in North Berwick. From its roots as a small community event, it has grown into one of Scotland’s most celebrated festivals, contributing over £9.9 million to the local economy.

At its core, Fringe by the Sea is driven by values of creativity, inclusivity and collaboration. We believe the arts can unite people, helping bridge gaps and address issues like isolation and rural deprivation. While we showcase international acts, the heart of the festival remains local, ensuring everyone has a space to create and connect.

How we support and engage with the community:

  • Local Talent Showcase: Our programme of 260+ events celebrates East Lothian’s local talent, giving local groups the chance to share the stage with international performers, building pride and confidence.
  • The Encounter Space: In 2024, we provided a platform for 20 local groups to engage with festival-goers, raise funds, and showcase their work.
  • Community Outreach Projects: Each year, we run a creative outreach project. We collaborate with organisations like Stepping Out Mental Health Charity and Dementia Friendly East Lothian, offering creative opportunities to those with limited access to the arts.
  • Young People: We partner with North Berwick Youth Project and Heavy Sound CIC to ensure young people are actively involved in the festival.
  • Charity Support:  In 2024 we raised over £10,000 for local charities, including RNLI and East Lothian Food Bank.
  • Local Businesses: We’re proud to partner with a number of local businesses and endeavour to ‘shop local’ for our own business requirements. Our Makers Market and Street Food Village give local vendors a platform while boosting the local economy.
  • Staff and Volunteers:  We have an army of friendly and welcoming locals who want everybody to experience the area they know and love.

Fringe by the Sea is more than just a festival—it’s a celebration of the people, businesses, and organisations that make East Lothian unique. We look forward to growing and continuing to create opportunities for everyone to be part of this vibrant community.
