Belle and Sebastian will celebrate 30 years of ‘If You’re Feeling Sinister’ by performing the iconic album in full at Fringe by the Sea, followed by a second set of classic tunes.

First released in 1996, the record has long-since attained mythic status – “greatest of all time” list fixtures with songs that have spent decades populating mixtapes and playlists. The Guardian praised ‘If You’re Feeling Sinister’ as “subtly poetic, wickedly funny, and gorgeously melodic.”

One of Scotland’s most beloved indie-pop bands, Belle and Sebastian pair thoughtful, relatable lyrics with warm melodic arrangements. Led by Stuart Murdoch, their unmistakable sound and timeless song-writing have earned them a worldwide audience and long standing place at the heart of Scotland’s music scene.

Forming in Glasgow in 1994, Belle and Sebastian have become one of the country’s most enduring and influential indie-pop bands. Over the course of 12 studio albums, the have received wide-spread critical claim and a loyal global following. Their accolades include ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music’ at the NME Awards in 2014 and Best Newcomer at The Brits in 1999, recognising their lasting impact on modern music.

Belle and Sebastian’s music has reached even wider audiences through numerous TV and film features. Their much loved track ‘The Boy With The Arab Strap’ became instantly recognisable after soundtracking the end credits of the TV hit series ‘Teachers’, while other catalogue favourites have appeared across international cinema and television including 2007’s hot film, Juno.

Guidance aged 12+

Unforeseen: Improvising Life and Music is a 60‑minute multimedia performance by cellist and sound artist Justyna Jablonska, exploring migration, memory and the unpredictable act of improvising a life. Blending live cello, electronics, spoken word and film, she creates a richly layered world of sound and image.

Drawing on early childhood memories, field recordings and testimonies from Polish, Ukrainian and Roma migrants, the piece weaves maternal voices, lullabies, birdsong, Eastern European folk melodies and atmospheric electronica. Its semi‑improvised form brings immediacy, intimacy and emotional charge.

Featuring a film by Anna Leszczynska, with haunting photography and animated visions of post‑industrial landscapes. Co‑directed with Fiona McKinnon and co‑written with Alex Edmonds. Supported by Creative Scotland and Chamber Music Scotland.

Greig Laidlaw is truly one of the biggest characters in Scottish sport. Fred MacAulay welcomes Greig for this featured conversation about his inspirational rugby career and much-lauded leadership style – with plenty of laughs thrown in for good measure!

A proud Scotsman with a fierce work ethic, Greig knew early on where he wanted to be — on a rugby pitch. Even while completing an apprenticeship as a joiner, he kept pushing, training, and closing the gap between a childhood dream and a professional career. From his Scotland debut in 2010 to his international retirement in 2019, Greig became one of the most influential figures in modern Scottish rugby. He captained his country 39 times — more than half of his 76 caps — and more than any other Scottish male player in history.

A strategist, a metronomic goalkicker, a captain with a calm edge, he was the heartbeat of Scotland through two World Cups and a British & Irish Lions tour in 2017. His club career has taken him across Scotland, England, France and Japan, winning silverware and earning the respect of every environment he entered. Wherever he has played, he has proven to be a leader you can trust, a thinker you can follow, and a competitor who raises the standards of those around him.
