FRINGE BY THE SEA IS TEAMING UP WITH

WOOL SCHOOL TO ‘WEAVE WONDER’

WE’RE CREATING ‘MEGA’ BUNTING FOR FRINGE BY THE SEA 2023 FESTIVAL. AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

THE CHALLENGE:

As part of FBTS 2023’s Weaving Wonder project, connecting people through creativity, we’re working with Wool School, inviting anyone who wants to get involved to help us make a giant length of festival bunting.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a knitting needle in your life – an easy, beginner friendly, step by step guide for knitted bunting triangles and rectangles can be found on the Wool School You Tube channel here.

If you are crafty, you don’t need to stick to traditional bunting shapes. You can take inspiration from the wonder around us in East Lothian – from our beautiful coastlines and sea creatures to our fields and flowers, our birds and woodland animals.

And don’t worry if sewing or crochet is more your thing than knitting, our Weaving Wonder project welcomes all forms of textiles. Just follow the guidance below.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Create a single segment (or as many as you like!) which will be combined with others created within the East Lothian community. The end result will be a huge length of collectively created bunting which will feature at Fringe by the Sea festival in North Berwick’s Lodge Grounds from 4th-13th August 2023.

The size for each segment we’re working to is approx. 15cm wide x 20cm deep but you can go up to a maximum of 30cm x 30cm.

We’re inviting anyone – all ages – to get involved. You could create your own segment/s at home, in your craft group, or as part of a community group or school class.

We are also holding a series of drop-in sessions to help you get started or if you just fancy a chat while you’re knitting or creating. Details will be sent to all those who register.

Whilst the core of this project will be bunting made from individual segments, we’d also be delighted if you want to knit or sew a whole length of bunting in your own design.

ARE THERE ANY RULES/GUIDANCE?

To allow us to get in touch with you, please register your involvement here

You can also register in person at Chandlers, 65 High Street, North Berwick EH39 4HQ.

Ideally, segments are created from a selection of recycled yarn in FBTS colourways (see colour references below), which is being provided by the generous team at Chandlers.  This can be collected from the Chandlers shop at the above address.

You can however make a segment from any yarn as long as it’s recycled, cotton or acrylic (so it’s resilient when hung outdoors).

Fabric bunting should be made from recycled fabrics where possible. If you’re not sure about something, just ask.

Completed segments should be handed in or posted to Chandlers by June 30th 2023.

For any questions, just pop in to Chandlers on North Berwick High Street or email weavingwonder@fringebythesea.com

Good luck and happy making!

NB: Whilst we will endeavour to display all bunting supplied, we may not be able to incorporate it all into the festival site. As the segments will be combined with others supplied, we won’t be able to return them after the festival.
