After years of busking and sharing covers on YouTube, the time has come for Rianne Downey to step into the spotlight with the release of her debut album, A Consequence of Love. The record showcases the Scottish rising star’s love of country music, with songs that explore love and loss, both romantic and familial and, on the soaring title track, the importance of putting herself first.

Rianne Downey is a Scottish singer-songwriter who began her musical journey at just 16. While attending Cardinal Newman High School, she was awarded the prestigious James McAvoy Scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.

Now a true Scottish sensation, Downey has captured national attention through her collaboration with Paul Heaton of The Beautiful South, providing stunning vocals on his recent tour and winning over audiences across the UK.

Rooted in country and folk, Downey’s album also weaves in unorthodox Celtic touches, giving it a distinctive and slightly off-beat charm. Journey back to the carefree days of the 70s with Scotland’s well loved original boy band Bay City Rollers reigniting the global ‘Rollermania’ phenomenon that captured the hearts of fans of all ages.

With over 300 million albums sold worldwide, Bay City Rollers were among the most iconic bands of their generation, winning fans over with classic hits like ‘Bye Bye Baby’ and ‘I Only Want to Be With You’, while cementing their place in pop history.

Renowned comedian, author and broadcaster Ian Hislop is the iconic Editor of magazine ‘Private Eye’ and captain of long-standing TV series ‘Have I Got News For You’.

We’re delighted to welcome Ian to Fringe by the Sea for an intimate conversation exploring the stories and insights from his remarkable career spanning more than 40 years.

After studying English Literature at Oxford University, Ian was appointed editor of the satirical ‘Private Eye’ in 1986, guiding it to both critical acclaim and commercial success. With his signature wit and satirical approach, Ian offers sharp social and political commentary through investigative journalism. Published fortnightly, Private Eye maintains a loyal leadership of over 700,000 and is known for its annual edition, authored by Ian in recent years.

Beyond journalism, Ian has showcased his talents as a playwright, writing acclaimed works such as A Bunch of Amateurs, Trial by Laughter and The Wiper Times. Ian has also produced many celebrated documentaries for BBC Television and BBC Radio 4 across history, literature, and comedy.

Ian will be available for a (time-limited) book signing after the event. His book will be available to purchase at the event during Fringe by the Sea (31st July-9 August) through Night Owl Books.
