KOOL & THE GANG, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, LOUIS THEROUX, BEN FOGLE, CAPERCAILLIE AND COLONEL MUSTARD & THE DIJON 5 FEATURE IN FIRST WAVE

31st JULY – 9th AUGUST IN NORTH BERWICK

PLUS NEW BUS SERVICES TO KEY DESTINATIONS

Fringe By The Sea – East Lothian’s award-winning, independent multi-arts festival – is gearing up for another ambitious year, unveiling its first wave of shows for Summer 2026.

This year’s early announcement features a powerful mix of global icons, cultural trailblazers and feel-good festival favourites, including soul legends Kool & The Gang, Scottish indie-pop icons Belle & Sebastian, acclaimed documentary-maker Louis Theroux, adventurer Ben Fogle, the cream of Scottish trad Capercaillie and party-starters Colonel Mustard and The Dijon 5.

For the first time since the festival was launched in 2008, FBTS will launch ahead of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe offering five days of clash-free events before the world’s biggest arts festival in Scotland’s capital.

Set to ignite the dancefloor on Friday 7th August, global funk legends Kool & The Gang bring six decades of chart-topping, era-defining hits to North Berwick. With over 70 million albums sold, Grammy Awards, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and fresh from their 2024 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the group promises a non-stop celebration of the songs that shaped generations: Celebration, Ladies’ Night, Get Down on It, Cherish, Jungle Boogie and many more.

Led today by founding member Robert “Kool” Bell, their bulletproof funk and genre-crossing grooves guarantee one of the summer’s biggest nights.

Fresh from celebrating the 30th anniversary of treasured albums, Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister, Scottish indie-pop icons Belle & Sebastian perform ‘If You’re Feeling Sinister’ plus fan favourites, on Thursday 6th August. The early album harks back to their Glasgow roots in their own unique and mysterious way. Belle and Sebastian pair thoughtful, relatable lyrics with warm melodic arrangements. Led by Stuart Murdoch, their unmistakable sound and timeless song-writing have earned them a worldwide audience and long standing place at the heart of Scotland’s music scene.

Documentary pioneer and cultural icon Louis Theroux brings his trademark curiosity and wit to Fringe by the Sea for a special in-person conversation event on Sunday 2nd August. From Weird Weekends to My Scientology Movie to the unexpected global smash Jiggle Jiggle, Louis will share stories from a career spent engaging with some of the world’s most fascinating and extreme characters.Audiences will also have the chance to meet Louis in a time-limited meet & greet after the show, with books available at the event via Night Owl Books.

One of Britain’s best-known explorers and storytellers, Ben Fogle joins the festival on Saturday 1st August for an in-depth conversation about his extraordinary life of adventure – from living on Taransay during the BBC’s Castaway to rowing across the Atlantic, racing to the South Pole, and crossing deserts and continents.

Fresh from celebrating four decades at the forefront of traditional music, internationally acclaimed Celtic ensemble Capercaillie arrive on Sunday 2nd August with their unmistakable mix of Gaelic heritage, soaring vocals, and bold contemporary influences. With over a million album sales, tours across 30 countries, and the first Gaelic Top 40 single to their name, this is a rare chance to experience one of Scotland’s most influential musical groups live.

Guaranteed to raise smiles, spirits and heart rates, Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 return on Sunday 2nd August with their sunshine-yellow stage presence and irresistible, feel-good party energy. Winners of the Scottish Alternative Music Awards’ Best Live Act, the 11-piece collective promise a full-family festival celebration powered by unity, mischief and standout summer anthems.

The Skinny magazine said about Fringe by the Sea: ‘it isn’t chasing trends or viral moments and that’s what makes it brilliant’.

In 2025, an independent Economic Impact Report by MKA Economics showed a record-breaking £11 million boost for East Lothian’’s local economy was generated through Fringe by the Sea, from over 103,000 visitors – a rise of 20% on 2024.

ADDITIONAL BUS SERVICE

For the first time, festival-goers will have the option of booking reliable, direct late-night buses home from Fringe by the Sea to destinations across East Lothian, Edinburgh and Glasgow, planned around major headline shows and delivered in partnership with Happy Bus.

£11M BOOST FROM FRINGE BY THE SEA TO EAST LOTHIAN ECONOMY

Festival-goers celebrate creativity, connection & community

Fringe by the Sea has delivered its most successful festival to date, with an independent survey of visitors to East Lothian’s multi-arts festival revealing a significant cultural and economic impact for the local community.

The report highlights the festival’s continued growth, with attendance increasing 20% to 103,000 visitors this year.

The economic impact also showed strong gains, with the event contributing over £11 million to the local economy and supporting 147 tourism-related jobs throughout the county. Findings reveal a significant boost in new visitors to East Lothian, many of whom explored nearby attractions such as the Scottish Seabird Centre, local museums, and points of interest across North Berwick, Dunbar, and East Linton.

The research also highlights a 20% year-on-year increase in the use of accommodation, cafés, and restaurants during the Fringe by the Sea period, demonstrating that visitors are staying longer and taking the time to discover more of what the county has to offer.

Key highlights from this year’s festival include:

56% of attendees came from outside East Lothian (up from 44% in 2024)

96% of visitors came to North Berwick specifically because of FBTS

88% of attendees would “definitely” attend future FBTS events

95% rated their experience as “Excellent” or “Very Good”

The findings reflect not only the growing popularity of the festival, but also its power to bring people together through a shared celebration of creativity, connection and community.

Cultural Highlights and Big-Name Acts

The 2025 lineup featured exclusive performances from French duo Air, the Mercury Prize-winning Ezra Collective, and comedian Alan Davies, in a diverse programme of music, arts and culture. Festival-goers enjoyed events across four venues, around town and in a buzzing central hub, with local food vendors, creative Maker’s Market and family activities.

Sustainability and Community at the heart of the Festival

Fringe by the Sea continues to prioritise key sustainability measures in 2025, including the use of John Clark Volvo electric cars for talent transportation and the installation of a biophilic garden by Lynn Hill to encourage and educate visitors on the importance of connecting with nature. Additional bike racks were available in The Lodge to promote travel without the use of cars while public transport options included a special midnight train service from Scotrail and additional bus services.

All festival waste is meticulously hand-sorted by partner Caledonia Horticulture, ensuring that 99% of waste is recycled, or converted into energy. Daily ‘Rubbish Chats’ were hosted for free for visitors to show the work undertaken by the team and the importance of waste sorting to avoid the use of landfill. This year also saw the launch of a reusable cup Initiative, reducing single use wastage and raising over £7k for Scottish Coastal Clean-Up charity.

Fundraising efforts continued with close to a total of £13k raised for local charities including Leuchie House and RNLI, through events over the 10 days.

With over 50+ events focusing on climate, environment and sustainability including Nature Day with Scottish Seabird Centre, Coastal Walks, Nature Animation Workshops, E-Bike Tours and Natural Art Workshops, Fringe by the Sea ensured that sustainability is at the core of the festival.

Accessibility action

Following funding from the North Berwick Community Area Partnership, Fringe by the Sea introduced new and improved accessible seating platforms in the main big top and lodge stages. The funding also allowed for two passenger buggies to help those with restricted mobility access the main festival site from blue badge parking, enhancing comfort and inclusion for all.

Commenting on the success of this year’s event, Fringe By The Sea Festival Director Rory Steel said:

“With more visitors than ever before coming to enjoy our community-led festival, the team at Fringe By The Sea has been truly humbled by fabulous feedback we’ve received.

“Whether it was Ezra Collective hanging out with our local youth club, the epic artistry of AIR bringing their global tour to North Berwick, Dunbar’s Racecar playing a magical, intimate gig or any one of our amazing local artists performing on the Lighthouse Live stage, this year had so many memorable moments we can rightly be proud of sharing throughout East Lothian. Bringing people together to share in these moments is what it is all about.

“The uplift to the local economy is another important part of delivering Fringe By The Sea, and we’re immensely grateful to all our partners, suppliers, traders and festival-goers for their commitment to making our wonderful wee festival such a special part of Scotland’s cultural summer scene.”

Fringe By The Sea 2026 will take place on 31st July to 9th August.

The full programme for this year’s Fringe By The Sea in North Berwick will be available at www.fringebythesea.com from 10am on Thursday 5 June.

With over 250 events across 10 days (1–10 August), the festival spans music, comedy, conversation, film, and family entertainment. From hands-on workshops in The Border Bothy to artisan discoveries in Coulters Makers Market, all set against the backdrop of Conde Nast Traveller’s UK’s Best Seaside Town 2025, it is little wonder that people flock to East Lothian in August.

Now a firm fixture in Scotland’s festival scene, Fringe By The Sea has this year attracted acts making their only appearance north of the border this summer, such as the Ezra Collective and AIR, who will be performing their seminal album Moon Safari in an astonishing ‘white box’ stage show. Former North Berwick resident Hamish Hawk will be returning to headline an incredible indie night also featuring Billy Nomates, Cloth and Blur’s Dave Rowntree doing a DJ set

The final programme also includes Jim Moir (stage name Vic Reeves) talking about his life as both an artist and one half of one of Britain’s best loved comedy double acts; sharp-witted TV host Steph McGovern; everyone’s favourite dancing nature presenter Hamza Yassin; Scottish comedian Fred MacAulay and an indie DJ set with Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite and Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch (who will also be talking about his book, Nobody’s Empire); and Christopher Biggins in conversation with Patricia Hodge (in aid of Leuchie House).

New for 2025 is Wavelength, a music film festival strand supported by Screen Scotland. Running throughout the festival, it features Seaside Screenings, filmmaker talks, and gigs inspired by film. Guests include Irvine Welsh, director Tim Pope, and rising Scottish acts such as Redolent and the documentary Since Yesterday, featuring the untold story of Scotland’s girl bands. To wrap things up, the RSNO is performing the tunes from James Bond to bring the festival’s curtain down.

The family programme is bursting with fun for all ages. Expect high-energy performances from pioneering dance troupe Flawless, science thrills from 2025 Olivier Award-winning Brainiac Live, and magic from Kevin Quantum. Crowd favourites like Mr Boom, Artie’s Singing Kettle, and Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco return, alongside musical mayhem from Sprog Rock and Comedy Club 4 Kids. The expanded Kids Zone includes Lego and clay play, yoga, seaside science and more, plus the brand-new Wavelength Music Film Festival will include films for young audiences in a pop-up cinema. The Nature Day at the Scottish Seabird Centre is another family favourite.

Across the festival, a mix of ticketed events, free drop-ins, and surprise pop-ups ensures there’s something for everyone—making Fringe By The Sea an accessible and welcoming experience for all.

Fringe by the Sea is delighted to welcome Border Biscuits as a new Community Partner for 2025. Drop into The Border Bothy for a warm and welcoming mix of workshops and relaxed chats, from animation and jewellery making to baby massage. Inside, The Border Nook offers a cosy corner to enjoy a biscuit and a breather, with surprise pop-up moments throughout the festival. Get hands-on at the Build-a-Border-Biscuit pop up station, and don’t forget to visit the Border Biscuit Box for your favourite treats and exclusive festival merchandise.

North Berwick Trust will continue its support for Fringe by the Sea as a Master Partner through the three-year grant funding announced in 2023, showcasing its own work and facilitating local community group involvement within the free-to-access North Berwick Trust Hub.

Following a hugely successful debut in 2024, The Times and The Sunday Times return as media partners for 2025, with events including The Sunday Papers alongside The Sunday Times Scotland on Sunday, August 3, and Off Air with Jane & Fi: In Conversation with Judy Murray on Friday, August 8.

Tennent’s also returns to the festival bars for 2025, joined by Magners as the cider of choice, ensuring festivalgoers stay refreshed throughout the ten-day event.

The festival organisers are thrilled to welcome back Coulters Property as Community Partner for the fourth consecutive year. Coulters, who have recently expanded their presence in East Lothian with the opening of their new North Berwick branch, are looking forward to continuing their involvement with the Makers’ Market. The market will be open throughout the 10-day event and celebrates the craftsmanship of talented makers from across the county. Coulters will also be supporting the George Clarke event, helping attendees discover their own “amazing spaces.”

Brought to you by The Lighthouse, North Berwick’s co-working hub and home to FBTS, the popular Lighthouse Live stage also returns.

Fringe By The Sea is proud to be supported by a fantastic group of Affiliate Partners who help make the festival the vibrant and successful event it is. We’re delighted to partner with a range of businesses – many of them local – including Gilsland Park, Signman Print, Shaw Design, The List Magazine, John Clark Volvo, Chandlers, ReUse Scotland, Drem Timber, Emma Cross Interior Design, Caledonian Horticulture, Lind & Lime Gin, Audio Light Systems in partnership with Samsung, and Lynn Hill Garden Design. Their support and collaboration are vital to the festival’s continued growth and community impact.

According to the Economic Impact Report conducted by MKA Economics for Fringe by the Sea 2024, the festival’s visitor spending has contributed an additional £9.9 million to the local economy. This marks a 36% increase over the 2023 figure, highlighting the growing economic significance of the event.

Festival Director Rory Steel said: “As word of Fringe By The Sea’s welcoming atmosphere and brilliant talent on show spreads year after year, we’re always aiming to keep one step ahead with an ever more impressive line-up. And what a billing we have this year, with more than 250 events taking place in North Berwick this August, there’s absolutely something for everyone.

“Of course none of this would happen without the magnificent team who work for the festival as well as our wonderful volunteers that provide such an important role. We are also really pleased to bring Borders Biscuits to the Fringe By The Sea table – there is a strong chance that I may not lose quite so much weight from dancing over this years’ 10 days!”

GET ON OUR ‘WAVELENGTH’

FRINGE BY THE SEA LAUNCHES NEW MUSIC FILM FESTIVAL

featuring Irvine Welsh, Mogwai, Tim Pope, Redolent, Since Yesterday & more…

Fringe by the Sea is adding a film strand to its ten day multi-arts programme presented in August in East Lothian, celebrating the stories of the sounds and soul of Scottish music.

With support from Screen Scotland, Fringe by the Sea’s music film festival Wavelength will focus on the magic created when music and film come together and encourage audiences to consider the role of film in the journey of Scottish music, be it touching global scenes or inspiring hometown dreams.

A diverse programme of ‘Seaside Screenings’, director chats, gigs linked to film and more will be shown at the festival which takes place in North Berwick’s Lodge Grounds between 1-10th August 2025.

Events will be hosted in the festival’s iconic Big Top and around the Festival Hub with the majority of screenings taking place in a new airy and atmospheric Dome venue with headset cinema making for a fully immersive screen experience for festival-goers. Festival partners, Samsung Electronics, is providing a premium UHD MicroLED technology videowall for the screenings.

The Wavelength programme has been curated by a team passionate about both music and film. Co-curators presenter, writer and DJ Vic Galloway and filmmaker Lewis Gourlay have joined forces with the creative team at Fringe by the Sea and, with support from music documentary festival Doc ‘N Roll, developed a distinctly spirited Scottish celebration of screen and sound.

Commenting on the creation of Wavelength, Fringe By The Sea Festival Director, Rory Steel, said: “With the launch of Wavelength, Fringe ByThe Sea is bringing a brilliant new film element to our ten day extravaganza. It’s only through the support of Screen Scotland and Samsung, and collaboration with other local organisations and businesses that we are able to continue to evolve our wonderful seaside festival while retaining the strong community values that make Fringe By The Sea so special.”

“As well as the very best of Scottish culture coming alive on screen, in gigs and through chats, our extensive community work will see young, local bands mentored in music video-making and on-site activities and animated screenings for children during the festival.” added Rory Steel.

“As a Music Film Festival, ‘Wavelength’ seamlessly integrates into the wider program at Fringe by The Sea and adds a unique cinema experience to the already successful multi-arts festival. We’ve curated a selection of films relevant to our audience, with work featuring some of Scotland’s biggest bands and highly creative work from local film makers. Music and film lovers of all ages and backgrounds are in for a treat, not just with the films themselves, but also the surrounding events that amplify the experience with in-depth Q&As, live performances and guest curated music video playlists.” Lewis Gourlay – Co-Curator

“I’m delighted to be involved with the inaugural ‘Wavelength’ Music and Film Festival as a co-curator and event host in 2025, part of the excellent ‘Fringe by the Sea’ programme. Music and the moving image have been intrinsically linked for many decades, and ‘Wavelength’ is about celebrating that magic in different ways. I’m looking forward to films concentrating on heritage Scottish acts and new music, as well as onstage discussions, LIVE performances, pop video playlists, animations and more. Being beside the seaside makes the whole event more memorable, unique and fun too. Beautiful North Berwick always comes to life with ‘Fringe by the Sea’ each year, and ‘Wavelength’ is another fine addition.” Vic Galloway

The programme will run from 1st – 10th August and feature the following, plus more to be announced:

Writer Irvine Welsh will open the festival with his take on the power of music and film together. Sharing with his ‘Seaside Archive’ – a curated playlist of music videos – he’ll also take us on a dance-able journey of film and tunes, in a family-friendly rave.

Director Tim Pope has worked with the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Queen, Sioux & the Banshees and Scotland’s Strawberry Switchblade. It was with The Cure, however, that his name was cemented in the music video hall of fame, producing over 30 of their videos.

25 years of cult Scottish band Mogwai was marked by the release of a documentary shedding light on the band’s journey from their Glasgow roots. Mogwai: If The Stars Had A Sound will be screened in the Dome. Stuart Braithwaite from the band will be part of a post screening discussion – and catch his Indie Disco DJ set later in the day.

Dinny Greet explores the enigmatic rise of Scottish band Redolent, winners of the Scottish Album of the Year, from obscure gigs to surprising financial windfalls, an unexpected record deal and a hopeful yet uncertain future. With post-film chat and special live performance.

Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scottish Girl Bands unearths Scotland’s Girl Bands from 1960 onwards, missing from the ranks of global success; artists whose work was, and continues to be, ignored by the selective bias of a male-dominated industry. Writer Carla J. Easton joins us to discuss and to perform as part of Hen Hoose.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra will present the music of Bond in a stunning Big Top finale to the week, set to film.

As part of Fringe by the Sea’s ongoing commitment to support the youth arts scene and culture, Wavelength will also engage youth bands to make their own fresh film content to tell the stories of the new sounds emerging from the county. Sound & Seen will be developed with East Lothian Council Arts Service.

With a focus on targeting a youth audience, a special Under 25s subsided ticket will be available for Dome screening events.

Further additions will be made to the programme, with event details and tickets released over coming weeks and the full programme available in early June.

PARTY VIBES. OLYMPIC INSPIRATION, ORCHESTRAL BOND, TOP SCOTTISH TALENT & BREAKDANCE FEATURE IN LATEST SHOWS RELEASE

The organizers are honoured to host Scotland’s most successful Olympian (6 gold, 1 silver), Sir Chris Hoy, who will be in conversation about his career as well as the devastating diagnosis of terminal prostate cancer in September 2023.

The first night of the festival closes with a night to remember with the Hot Dub Time Machine in the big top. Since first launching his time-travelling, ‘dance through the decades’ audio- visual party concept in 2011, Sydney’s Tom Lowndes has grown Hot Dub Time Machine into a world wide phenomenum having performed at festivals all over the globe.

The RSNO returns to North Berwick on the final night of Fringe By The Sea on 10th with a concert of James Bond music and songs. Scotland’s top orchestra never fails to entertain. Dressing up as favourite Bond villain is optional.

Hamish Hawk has built a reputation as an amazing live performer since he started singing when a student at St Andrews University in 2012. His unique style has won him fans wherever he appears and his third album, A Firmer Hand, was released last summer. Also on the bill will be Billy Nomates, the project of the Bristol-based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Tor Maries.

On Saturday 2nd August the British street dance group, Flawless, will be raising the roof when they appear with their brilliant popping, roboting, locking, lyrical hip hop, contemporary hip hop, breakdance and acrobatics. Formed in 2005 they won the National UK Street Dancing Championships (now known as Street Dance XXL) in the same year. In 2009 they reached the final of Britain’s Got Talent with Amanda Holden stating they were ‘jaw droppingly outstanding’, while Piers Morgan called the group ‘electrifying’.

It’s been almost 20 years since her first single “I wish I was a punk rocker” shot to no.1 in 7 different countries and since then Sandi Thom has continued to make albums that are eclectic, different and timeless. Having spent a significant time in the Middle East doing humanitarian work, Sandi Thom has been off the radar for several years. However, having now permanently relocated back to Scotland Sandi is back and better than ever. With over 80 million Spotify streams the Scottish singer’s popularity continues to grow organically. One song in particular; November Rain, taken from Thom’s album of Acoustic Classic Rock covers has seen a growth spurt.

Mànran is a Scottish band that was established in June 2010. Mànran is a Gaelic word for a melodic sound or a sweet tone. Since 2010 they have performed in over 30 countries worldwide including several international folk & world music festivals, won awards home and abroad and were invited to do a special one-off concert for the 2012 London Olympics and will be in North Berwick on 8th August.

Tuesday 5th sees festival favourite Artie’s Singing Kettle will be entertaining all ages with the original, beloved Singing Kettle repertoire that has captivated audiences over the years. Enjoy timeless favourites like “Aiken Drum”, “Three Craws” and “The Train to Glasgow”. The show promises to be a nostalgic journey filled with music and fun for the whole family. And as a special treat Artie may be persuaded to finish the show with “Auld Lang Syne”.

Last month Fringe By The Sea announced their first wave of acts – Air (playing Moon Safari), George Clarke, Boomtown Rats, Rory Stewart, The Bluebells (now sold out) and Brainiac Live!

North Berwick Trust will continue to support Fringe by the Sea as a Master Partner as part of the three-year grant funding announced in 2023. The Trust will not only showcase its own work but also help facilitate the involvement of local community groups within the free to access North Berwick Trust Hub.

The festival organisers are thrilled to welcome back Coulters Property as a sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. Coulters, who have recently expanded their presence in East Lothian with the opening of their new North Berwick branch, are looking forward to continuing their involvement with the Makers Market. The market will be open throughout the 10-day event and celebrates the craftsmanship of talented makers from across the county. Coulters will also be supporting the George Clarke event, helping attendees discover their own “amazing spaces.”

After a highly successful debut partnership in 2024, The Times and Sunday Times will return as media partners, bringing an exciting lineup of speakers and activations to the festival.

According to the Economic Impact Report conducted by MKA Economics for Fringe by the Sea 2024, the festival’s visitor spending has contributed an additional £9.9 million to the local economy. This marks a 36% increase over the 2023 figure, highlighting the growing economic significance of the event.

Festival Director Rory Steel said: “Our second line-up announcement has brilliant mix of amazing artists. The party will be well and truly ignited by the epic Hot Dub Time Machine taking us on a trip through the ages on opening night. The very best of our homegrown talent also features heavily, with Edinburgh-based indie sensation Hamish Hawk headlining our second Friday, and Scottish, high-energy trad music powerhouses Manran featuring on the same day as well as Sandi Thom who is back touring again. The RSNO return and will be a fantastic way to end the 10 days with a showcase of the best James Bond themes. With dance act Flawless and Artie’s Singing Kettle, our family programme is also taking shape nicely. We are so honoured that Sir Chris Hoy will be with us to tell about his incredible career and latest work in raising awareness of prostate cancer. As you can see, the Fringe By The Sea team really is pulling out all the stops for an awesome August ahead!”
